ULMSP distinguishes itself from other programs through an emphasis on improving the persistence of community college transfer students by the incorporation of the career development framework of the UCSD School of Medicine faculty development program. The model, which was developed from a longitudinal study of qualitative and quantitative data, has successfully worked with underrepresented minority junior faculty to improve their retention in careers in academic medicine (Daley, Wingard, & Reznik, 2006). The model consists of five components; Professional Skills Development , Networking, Understanding University Culture, Instrumental Mentoring and Wellness Practices.
