Instrumental Mentoring
ULMSP is designed to provide participants with on campus linkages with other programs and resources and most importantly, with long-term mentoring and career guidance. During the program, group workshops and one-on-one meetings are designed to promote mentor-student interactions, which facilitate the acquisition of skills. The program creates a physically and emotionally safe environment where students can stretch their own limits, engage in self-discovery and personal growth and develop group cohesiveness. In this setting, students can improve their communication skills with peers and professionals, expand their goal setting and decision making skills and practice their leadership skills by assuming positions in the student-run ULMSP program as program ambassadors/recruiters, counselors, peer mentors and associate directors. A series of alumni nights is organized to allow ULMSP alumni who are either undergraduate upperclassmen or students in graduate or professional school to speak to participants about their academic path and current research and career interests. ULMSP alumni peer mentors and ULMSP faculty and staff maintain advising and/or mentoring relationships with students throughout their undergraduate career, graduate or professional schools, fellowships and/or their entry into the workforce.
