Professional & Academic Skill Development
The skills development portion of the program includes English language proficiency, as well as, study skills with an emphasis on improving the student’s ability to organize and learn large volumes of material in short periods of time. ULMSP immerses the student in active science learning that permits them to become familiar with modes of scientific inquiry, rules of evidence, ways of formulating questions, proposing and presenting explanations and opportunities for reflection on their learning. Curricula examples include medical debates, lectures, drafting papers and giving presentations. This approach to teaching science is consistent with the National Science Education Standards. By introducing the concepts of language proficiency, working in study groups, research methodology training, and the preparation and oral presentation of original work, ULMSP helps students acquire tools that improve their study habits and build confidence in their academic abilities.
