Ramon Hernandez, DrPH, MPH Projector Director, UniversityLink Medical Science Program
- Dr. Ramón A. Hernandez, DrPH, MPH, is the Section Chief for Community Health in the Department of Pediatrics at UC San Diego, School of Medicine. He is part of a dynamic team, at the Center for Community Health, focused on preventing chronic diseases and promoting health equity in all San Diego communities.

Eduardo Fricovsky, Pharm.D. HCOP and HCOE Research Director
Dr. Eduardo Fricovsky, Pharm.D, is currently an Associate Clinical Professor at the UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS). He graduated with a BS from UCSD and obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the UC San Francisco School of Pharmacy in 2006. From 2006-2009, he completed an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein Research Service Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego and was awarded an NIH Loan Repayment Grant. He has broad training experience in biochemistry and molecular biology. His current research interest is related to diabetic cardiomyopathy and the effects of excessive enzymatic protein glycosylation in cardiac myocytes and their influence on heart function. He also studies gene expression of protein glycosylation enzymes in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetics at the UCSD Student Run Free Clinics. Dr. Fricovsky is the Laboratory Director of the Hispanic Center of Excellence-Research Methodology and Training Laboratory (HCOE-RTML) at UC San Diego that teaches K-12, community college and undergraduate students about biomedical science and laboratory research skills. He is also the Pharmacy Director of the UC San Diego Student Run Free Clinic Project that serves uninsured and homeless patients in San Diego and provides free access to prescription medications, medication therapy management and preventive healthcare services. Dr. Fricovsky also trains pharmacy and medical students at the Free Clinic and offers classes on prescription and substance abuse, motivational interviewing, drug adherence, and patient counseling and education skills.

Catalina Maynard
Catalina Maynard is currently a Learning Specialist in Narrative Medicine for the UCSD UniversityLink Medical Science Program, which provides students with a theatre-based process focused on personal/professional narratives, connection through dialogue, public speaking, and interviewing skills. Since joining ULMSP in 2012, she has worked with the UCSD Hispanic Center of Excellence as an actor/director in several instructional films. With more than thirty artist residencies, Catalina's focus is the development of authentic and original work for live performance, and the use of theatre and the human voice in the practice of empathy and bringing topical and relevant issues to the forefront. For more than twenty-five years, she has worked with a variety of theatre companies and academic institutions throughout the country which include Mark Taper Forum, Yale REP, Denver Center Theatre, Minneapolis Children’s Theatre, Arizona Theatre Co., Teatro Campesino, Company of Angels-Los Angeles, Peter J. Sharp Theatre (NYC), San Diego State University, and the Harney Academy in Boston, MA. Catalina received her theatre training at San Diego State University with an emphasis in performance. She is a past recipient of several California Arts Council/AIS, Department of Cultural Affairs, and NEA grants, a Thurgood Marshall Artist in Residency at UCSD (2015/2016), and a two-time recipient of the Craig Noel Critics Circle Award for acting.

Dr. Suzanne Hughes is the Evaluation and Data Specialist for the Health Career Opportunities Program (HCOP), including the UniversityLink Medical Science Program (ULMSP). Dr. Hughes’ areas of expertise include program development, implementation, and evaluation. Dr. Hughes has conducted research on maternal and child health (e.g., healthcare utilization, clinical guidelines in hospitals, and periconceptional alcohol use); immigrant health; and major behavioral factors (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, secondhand smoke exposure, and diet). Dr. Hughes received her MPH degree from Emory University and joint PhD degree in Public Health – Epidemiology from UC San Diego and San Diego State University. Dr. Hughes’ career mission is health equity – where everyone is able to fulfill their health potential. She is a globetrotter and enjoys meeting people from different cultures.

Dr. Sandra Daley, MD Program Founder
Dr. Daley is a graduate of UCSD School of Medicine and a Professor of Pediatrics at UCSD SOM. Dr. Daley has a 30-year history of clinical work, teaching and program development in the San Diego community. She practiced in a community clinic in San Diego for more than thirteen years and taught pediatric residents at a Tijuana hospital before joining the UCSD School of Medicine faculty in 1991. She served as assistant dean of Diversity and Community Partnerships at the UCSD School of Medicine from 1995 to 2007, and the Associate Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer. Dr. Daley has a proven track record in providing administrative leadership for several major programs at UCSD and in obtaining funding for those programs. Since 1996, she has been the Principal Investigator (PI) of grants funded by The California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and two grant initiatives funded by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration: the UCSD Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE), and the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP). These grants supported the design and implementation of academic enrichment and research training programs for students in K-12, community college, undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and health professions schools, which continue today.
